This First Look At Cars 3 Teases A Dramatic Third Lap

Cars 1 is fine and dandy, but Cars 2 is arguably the least adored of the Disney/Pixar franchises (which is to say it’s still pretty damn adored), so many of us weren’t exactly doing figure 8s for a third lap—until now.

Disney/Pixar has unveiled the very first look into Cars 3—in the form of a teaser trailer—and it’s not quite what we expected from a kids’ movie. It’s dark and mysterious, and ends with our favourite talking race-car, Lightning McQueen, getting into a serious crash, followed by the ominous message “From this moment on… everything will change.”

The plot of the movie was also released today:

“Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!”

This story of redemption totally parallels that of the Cars franchise itself—Cars 2 was the fiery crash, and the eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, is Cars 3‘s director Brian Fee, who’s making his directorial debut with this movie. Yeah, it is all a metaphor.

Cars 3 starts its engines June 16, 2017.
