The Bride Of Frankenstein Remake Doesn’t Need A Man

The Universal Monsters franchise is full of oldies-but-goodies, and we’re finally about to see a whole bunch of great monster movie classics getting some much-deserved reboots. They’re ALIIIIVE!

The Mummy, Van Helsing, and The Wolfman will all be returning to theatres soon new and improved, along with the classic Bride of Frankenstein. Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp will be at the helm of Bride, and he sounds pretty psyched about it:

“I loved it. It’s one of my favorite scripts I’ve written in years because if you re-imagine the Frankenstein story, it gets into so many issues of men trying to feel dominant over women. To create someone who then says, “You don’t own me,” it becomes a tale of liberation. It was great. It was really fun, and I hope it gets going soon because I think it’d make for a great movie.”

Yes and yes and yes. A great example of where this could go is Penny Dreadful’s version of the Bride, played by Billie Piper. Her many insane and delicious speeches throughout the show are harsh and angry and devastating and every single one of them is an absolute showstopper. She’s completely nuts, but you’re kinda into it.

The Bride of Frankenstein is a great opportunity for a really sympathetic and compelling female lead. The Bride is kinda the monster and the victim and the hero of the story all at once—she didn’t choose to be monsterized, and now that she’s been put into this insane position she has to buckle up and deal with it. Koepp further explains:

“The stories are dictated by the creature. In ours, the Bride is essentially a sympathetic figure. This tragic, hunted figure. And obviously the Mummy is a very bad entity that must be stopped. That’s not us. The troublemakers are the ones who would try to control her.”

No matter how the movie turns out, it sounds like it’s going to be pretty juicy. Fingers crossed that the classic white and black hairstyle will be making a reappearance.
