Counting Down The Best Video Game Remakes

Video games are a part of many treasured memories from our childhood. They join us through various stages in our lives and even serve as a rite of passage. Advances in technology can make even our most beloved games seem dated, since as we grow older, so do they. But all is not lost! Thanks to the new trend of remastering old classics, retro gems of video game’s past get to shine once again. Here are the top five remastered video games that got me really excited!

5. Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix

Kingdom Hearts 2

Kingdom Hearts is a game series that has one of the wildest crossovers ever. It’s a great example of the magic that can occur when you combine American and Japanese culture. This series encapsulated the best of both worlds by introducing charming new characters in a world filled with Disney nostalgia. Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix was released as part of the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix in North America back in December 2014. This re-release for the PlayStation 3 features improved visuals and music, making the game much more accessible for modern players. This is the perfect game to keep fans busy while we wait for the highly anticipated release of Kingdom Hearts 3, which sadly has no definite release date yet.

4. 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic

For all fans of this suave blue hedgehog, news of a high-quality re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was huge. The game’s riddled with nostalgia, from getting reunited with the adorable fox Tails, to being able to dash through loop-de-loops whilst collecting golden rings. Sonic has been absent from our lives as of late, but this game ]brings back incredible memories for those who grew up in the ’90s. Back then, he was a video game icon and at the top of the gaming world, alongside Mario and Link. The game was re-released in North America last October, therefore, it’s perfect for people looking forward to Sonic’s 25th anniversary this year.

3. Grim Fandango Remastered

Grim Fandango

Grim Fandango Remastered! This is often referred to as one of the greatest video games of all time. Its film noir aesthetic, clever story, and fantastic puzzles gave it an edge to other adventure games. The original was released on PC in 1998 and sadly isn’t playable on modern Windows.  However, in January 27 2015 a remastered version was released on the PS4, PC, and Mac, which breathes life into this classic. Now you can join Manny Calavera on his journey through the Land of the Dead as he investigates the root causes of the crime and corruption that is plaguing it.

2. Halo: Combat Evolved (The Master Chief Collection)

halo-combat-evolved-anniversary

Halo fans all remember the game that started a legacy and arguably launched one of the best first-person shooter  franchises of all time. It’s been almost 15 years since the initial release of this game and the dated graphics can be a turn off for players new to the series. However, you can now relive Master Chief’s first adventure on the Xbox One, and your eyes won’t hate you for it.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Zelda Ocarina of Time

Any Zelda release is a call for celebration, however, the re-release of Zelda: Ocarina of Time made fans (me) hysterically happy. Ocarina of Time 3D was released on the 3DS in June 2011 and had fans rushing to stores for its midnight release. This made the game a million times more accessible to play because, let’s be real, Nintendo 64 graphics looks gnarly these days. The remastered edition features updated graphics, music, and gameplay that perfectly capture the wonder of the original masterpiece. This is arguably the most revered Zelda game because the soundtrack, story, and world are truly timeless. I still sometimes listen to classic tunes like “Zelda’s Lullaby,” “Song of Storms.” and “Gerudo Valley” when looking for something to brighten my day.
