Benedict Cumberbatch Is Doctor Strange: 9 Reasons To Celebrate This Magical Casting

This news is Supreme.

Well, how about that? We finally have our Sorcerer Supreme, and it’s the man the Internet wanted all along.

Benedict Cumberbatch, star of “Sherlock” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” and other delightful projects that have won your heart five hundred times over in the past several years, is Marvel’s pick for “Doctor Strange.” He’ll star in director Scott Derrickson’s movie about the Master of the Mystic Arts, hitting theaters in 2016.

Captain America

Great casting? No. That’s an understatement. It’s magical casting — and here are nine reasons why.

1. I mean, first off, come on.

It’s about time we got this man into the Marvel Universe, isn’t it?

2. He brings in his own universe of fans.

Cumberbatch wields an enormous fan base, and they’re all about to meld and mingle with the magic of Marvel. It’s going to be an interesting few years for fandom.

3. He’s a great actor for a great character.

Cumberbatch has a lot to sink his teeth into when it comes to Stephen Strange. He’s a cocky neurosurgeon who loses his abilities to operate due to an accident, only to travel across the world and find a new means of saving lives in the form of ancient arts. It’s a meaty role, and one that an actor like Cumberbatch can and will knock out of the park.

4. He’s great with a sidekick.

One of Strange’s closest allies is Wong, his martial artist sidekick and friend. No, Martin Freeman probably won’t play Wong, but if “Sherlock” showed us anything, it’s that Cumberbatch pairs well with wingmen. Tumblr, start your engines.

5. He’s used to playing the smartest guy in the room.

Stephen Strange isn’t the number one mind in the Marvel Universe, but he’s among the most arrogant; Cumberbatch can play that for days.

6. He’ll team up with the Avengers.

After starring in “Doctor Strange,” Cumberbatch will (presumably) play a role in the two-part “Avengers: Infinity War,” meaning we’ll see him stand shoulder to shoulder with Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and others. How’s that for fandom fodder?

7. He’ll team up against Hiddleston.

It’s inevitable, right? Doctor Strange versus Loki, with close friends Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston in the roles. The world is not ready.

8. We will now see all of the Doctor Strange otters.

That’s right: “Strange Otters” is about to become a thing.

9. Now, we can move on.

With Cumberbatch safely in the role of Strange, we don’t have to stress out about whether or not he’s lying to us whenever we talk to him. We don’t have to sweat all of the various casting rumors and supposed dealmaking surrounding Marvel’s magical hero. Now, we can move on and focus on other major casting rumors, like who else will star in “Doctor Strange,” and, for that matter…
