Warner Confirms Ben Affleck’s Directing A Batman Movie

While some are determined to label Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a commercial disappointment, it’s on the brink of crossing $800 million worldwide—with many ticket sales still to come. In fact, outside the films of Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan, and J.K. Rowling, it’s the highest-grossing Warner Brothers movie of all time. If you’re having a hard time perceiving this divisive blockbuster as a success, consider the fact that Zack Snyder is still slated to direct two Justice League movies for the studio. Warner chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara put any remaining doubt to rest yesterday when he confirmed that studio golden boy Ben Affleck has lined up his next directing gig—after the recently completed Live by Night—and it’s a Batman sequel.

Speaking to theatre owners at CinemaCon, Tsujihara argued that Batman v Superman did exactly what the studio wanted it to do. “It set up a great foundation for our DC slate, which includes at least 10 movies through 2020,” he explained. “I’m also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a stand-alone Batman movie.”

Little is known about the project, but we do know that (a) Oscar-winning screenwriter Affleck wrote the script and (b) his agent Patrick Whitesell has described it as “a really cool idea.” Even with a completed script, this project is still several years away. In the meantime, you’ll have three more chance to see Batfleck in action: The Justice League Part One, The Justice League Part Two, and August’s Suicide Squad. Watch the trailer for the latter below.
