Batman V Superman Costume Designer Calls Batman’s Latest Suit A ‘Complete 180’

Next year, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman will face off for the first time ever on the big screen in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice—and we’ll all be completely mesmerized by not only how incredibly strong and intimidating they are, but how perfect and comic-book accurate their costumes look.

For that, we have costume designer Michael Wilkinson to thank. Known for his work on 300, Man of Steel, American Hustle, and the upcoming Jennifer Lawrence film Joy, the film veteran sat down with People’s Choice just before his panel at the fashion convention MAGIC to discuss never-before-heard secrets about the super suits that our World’s Finest will wear.

First of all, Superman’s look hasn’t changed all that much since from Man Of Steel, according to Wilkinson– in fact, it’s the only costume from the first movie that will appear in the sequel, although it was tweaked just a little bit from its original version. But Batman’s new look, in contrast, will be unlike anything we’ve seen from the character on film before.

“The batsuit is a complete 180 degree turn from the previous film incarnations—our Batman’s power comes from his incredible physical strength and fighting skills, not from armor,” said Wilkinson. “The director Zack Snyder wanted him to look as much like the comic book version as possible.”

Of course, this version of Batman also has a literal medieval-style suit of bat-armor to shield himself against Superman, as we saw in the trailer—but until that big climactic part of the film, his super-bulky chest and brass-knuckled gloves (!!) will probably do the trick.

Meanwhile, Wonder Woman’s design was initially trickier, noted Wilminson, because there were no other film versions to look to for comparison. “Zack wanted our character to be a fierce and intimidating warrior—gritty, battle-scarred and immortal,” he said. “There is ancient Greek script on Wonder Woman’s weapons too.”

But the biggest surprise from the interview? That Jason Momoa’s already worn his super suit enough to become attached to it. “It was pretty hard to get Jason to get out of his Aquaman costume. It really became part of him,” Wilkinson said.

Momoa’s already been photographed in the costume before, of course, but up until now we’ve had no idea just how involved he’ll be in Batman V Superman. Regardless of how much screen time he has in this film, at least this is further proof that he’s clearly the perfect choice for Aquaman. Not that we didn’t know that already, of course!
