After cutting her teeth directing a pair of Primeval: New World episodes in 2012, Sanctuary’s own Amanda Tapping returns at the helm for the show's 10th episode, “The Great Escape.” (FYI: this week’s “anomaly” isn’t Steve McQueen.)
In an opener that sorta evokes the first scene of Jurassic Park, “something big and pissed off” escapes from its cage in a lab. That something then wreaks some havoc in the streets of Vancouver before entering an abandoned hockey rink (fittingly Canuck for Topping, who shot a previous ep at Canadian Tire). The hunt isn’t an easy one, natch, as Evan and Dylan have to catch the creature before Leeds’ less-friendly squad interferes. The upshot makes for an action-packed hour full of suspenseful gun-pointing and a significant amount of carnage. The whole affair plays out much like a slasher flick, but with less gratuitous nudity.
So what exactly is this mysterious escapee? It’s called a Terror Bird and that’s all we’re saying (use your imagination, or try to picture a gnarly-looking ostrich). Other things you’ll learn by tuning in: 1) obscure Trekkie trivia, 2) the importance of Zamboni garages, 3) how to use cheese puffs as a powerful luring device.
The latest ep of Primeval: New World aired last night (Tuesday 10E/7P), but you can catch the whole thing right here, or check out the first clip below.
And don't you dare forget to come back and tell us what you thought!
