Crash, bang, boom, foghorn noise. So goes the first look at J.J. Abrams' next attempt at capturing the Star Trek universe in Into Darkness. Details about the film have been kept so tight that it’s become somewhat of a joke, with Spock actor Zachary Quinto lampooning the secrecy on late-night television. The teaser doesn’t reveal much, though we get a first look at the vengeful Benedict Cumberbatch in vengeful action with his vengeful voice.
“You think you’re world is safe, it is an illusion,” says a British-sounding voice which can be none other that Sherlock Holmes, sorry, we mean Cumberbatch. Threatening to blow up the planet, the still-unnamed villain promises vengeance, vengeance, and more vengeance, as Transformers-like grating noises bombard our ears. Titled “Announcement,” this teaser marks Paramount's officially recognition of the film, though its existence has been tacitly acknowledged for a long time.
In this instalment, the crew of the Enterprise returns home to find the planet in chaos, attacked by a “a one man weapon of mass destruction.” Other than the grinding noises, we also get a lot of screaming faces, things exploding, and Chris Pine looking especially pensive. Now, start the rabid dissection of every frame! Or, as Cumberbatch says, "So. Shall we begin?" We’ve posted the Japanese version below, which has extra footage.
