Get Festive With Some Not-So-Angry Birds

If you believe the download data, roughly one in four people worldwide has played Angry Birds at some point. Lacking any real narrative complexity, this game might not seem like a natural fit for the big screen, but there’s no better grounds for adaptation these days than international awareness. With that in mind, Sony Pictures Animation—the company responsible for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, The Smurfs, and their respective sequels—has created The Angry Birds Movie, which is scheduled for release on May 20th, 2016.

According to the studio, this 3D animated comedy will finally explain why the birds are so angry. “The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds—or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.”

As the recent teaser made clear, these birds are just as troubled and rage-prone as the title suggests, but with a little more charm than you might expect. However, judging from a festive new holiday video, only the latter trait has been passed on to the next generation, who amusingly fumble their way through a classic Christmas carol. According to the description on YouTube, this came about when “the children who voiced the Hatchlings in the movie were asked to sing ‘Deck the Halls,’ and it turned out none of them really knew the words.” To see their adorable musical difficulties come to animated life, watch the video below.
