19 Ways Andrew Garfield Proved He Was The Most Amazing Spider-Man

Say what you will about The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, but Andrew Garfield’s take on the eponymous hero was a thing of beauty. I mean, sure, his Peter Parker was maybe a little too cool for school, but you’d be hard-pressed to argue his depiction of Spider-Man. In addition to bringing the character’s heart and humor, Garfield actually looked the part, especially compared to the now-iconic Ultimate Marvel Universe version. (Honestly, the below video says it all.)

Alas, Garfield’s turn as Spider-Man was cut short after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to win over critics and audiences (although fans can still look forward to Tom Holland as Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War). But in honor of the actor’s 32nd birthday, we’re taking a look back at what made Garfield’s Spider-Man the most astonishing, spectacular and, dare we say, amazing

1. He had the moves

Not only did Garfield look the part of Spider-Man, he moved like him too. Granted, a lot of that was probably CGI, but it was his CG model doing whatever a spider can.

2. He invented his own web-shooters

When the first trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man” hit the web (heh, web), Garfield’s Spidey already had a leg up for creating actual web-shooters — as opposed to the oft-bemoaned organic web-shooters in Sam Raimi’s movies.

3. And he put them to good use

Um… yeah.

4. He didn’t take $#&! from nobody

Don’t let it be said Garfield’s Spider-Man didn’t crack plenty of wise, much in keeping with his comic book counterpart. With great power comes great quips.

5. Especially from this guy

That’s what we like to call “committing to the bit,” ladies and gentlemen.

6. Seriously, he let this dude have it

tasm-sneeze-1439500461

Aww, poor car thief.

7. He also saved Stan Lee that one time

Best cameo ever?

8. He was tech-savvy

Garfield’s Spider-Man was very much a millennial take on the character, which seemed appropriate for the Ultimate-inspired version on the wall-crawler. You just know he was constantly having to update Aunt May’s computer software.

9. And he could multitask

Like any good millennial, Garfield’s Spidey was an expert at doing multiple things at once — even if one of those things was safeguarding a highly unstable plutonium vial.

10. His non-lethal combat was aces

In classic form, Garfield’s Spider-Man wasn’t exactly on the best terms with the NYPD. (That’s what happens when you date the Captain’s daughter.) But he did know not to hit too hard.

11. He was even pals with a few firemen

Come on, how can you not love this guy?

12. But he was still a man of the people

Heart of Gold, thy name is Andrew Garfield.

13. When life gave him lemons, he made lemonade

Even with only two movies to his name, Garfield’s Spidey got himself into quite a few scrapes with the bad guys—but he definitely held his own.

14. And there were a bunch of lemons

The Lizard, the Rhino, Electro, Green Goblin—not to mention petty criminals. Ah, what might have been this series’ version of the Sinister Six…

15. But he was pretty cordial about it

tasm2-not-a-shaker-1439500558

“Hey, my name is Spider-Man! You can call me Web-head, you can call me Amazing, just don’t call me late for dinner, you get it?”

16. He looked out for his own

tasm-car-save-1439500385

Garfield may have grown up in Great Britain, but his Spider-Man was full-blooded New Yorker and gave back to his fellow citizens.

17. Even the little guy

D’aww…

18. Especially the little guy

tasm-kid-save-1439500400

…awwOHMYGOD!!!

19. He knew when to make a comeback

After losing his girlfriend to the dastardly Green Goblin, it would have been all too easy for Spider-Man to hang up the suit and wallow in misery for a few years. But Garfield’s Spidey wasn’t about to turn his back on the people when they needed him most.
