Alice Through The Looking Glass Teaser Promises Eye-Popping Upgrade

It’s hard to believe, but nearly six sequel-less years have passed since the release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Grossing over a billion dollars worldwide—making it the second highest-grossing movie of 2010—Alice would seem to be an obvious candidate for an instant follow-up. While all involved would have been happy to crank something out a year or two later, the development process took longer than expected.

The departure of Burton might be cause for concern among some fans, but he has made it clear that he was uncomfortable with the first film’s extensive use of green screen—and that discomfort shows in the finished film. Even for those who were happy with the results, there’s no reason to fear new director James Bobbin, as his two previous movies (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted) demonstrate a deft hand, capable of charming kids and adults alike.

But there’s no need to take my word for it, as Disney has released an impressive new teaser for Alice Through the Looking Glass. Original cast members Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, and Anne Hathaway are joined by Rhys Ifans as Zanik Hightopp and Sacha Baron Cohen as Time, “a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.” If nothing else, this teaser promises eye-popping imagery beyond anything in the original. What it all means is a mystery at this point, but it sure looks cool.
