11 Cool Things Bill Murray Said On Bill Murray Day

bill murray day

One of the absolute coolest things to happen during TIFF wasn’t the world premiere of some red-hot new movie, it was Bill Murray Day, which went down September 5. That special day’s main attractions was clearly a 30th anniversary screening of Ghostbusters, in which director Ivan Reitman and star Bill Murray were in attendance. The event kicked off with a Bill Murray costume contest, where someone actually wore a Space Jam Tune Squad tank top.

After the screening, Murray dance-sang his way onto the stage, to the sweet sounds of Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.” He was also wearing bright-red pants and a hat with buttoned-up ear flaps. It was almost as wonderfully surreal as listening to Reitman and (mostly) Murray take part in a lengthy Q&A for a few hundred fans. Here are the 11 coolest things Murray said:

1. Ghostbusters co-star Sigourney Weaver actually came up with the idea of being possessed during her audition, which led to the creation of the Gatekeeper and the Keymaster.

2. Dan Akroyd originally wrote Ghostbusters with the impression that it would star himself and John Belushi. “After Belushi died, I was in the neighbourhood, and knew Dan,” Murray humbly explained.

3. Akroyd did him the solid of only giving Columbia Pictures Ghostbusters if they would back Murray’s dramatic feature, Razor’s Edge.

4. He was nominated for Best Foreign Actor for his starring role in Ivan Reitman’s Canadian summer camp comedy, Meatballs. George C. Scott won for The Changeling. “That was the first time I walked out in anger when I didn’t win,” Murray confessed.

5. He knew he was going to be a star when the Meatballs makeup lady accidentally burned his face with a cigarette that was dangling from her mouth. There was a bit of sarcasm in that statement.

6. According to Murray, his character in the upcoming comedy-drama St Vincent is like his Meatballs counselor, if he was drunk on highballs for 40 years.

7. On Bill Murray Day, he watched Kristen Wiig’s new movie, Welcome to Me (which he called “one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen”), attempted to make coffee, and stayed in his his hotel room, where people kept coming in to complain about Toronto’s humidity. “That’s what my day’s been like. It’s mostly been a weather report,” Murray jokingly added.

8. During a recent cab ride in Oakland, California, upon learning that his driver played the saxophone but rarely had time to practice, Murray decided to drive the taxi while the cabbie sat in the back and played his instrument.

9. The more fun he’s having, the better his work is. “It’s changed my life learning that, and it’s made me better at what I do.”

10. His two favoutite films are Francois Truffaut’s Small Change and Roberto Benigni’s Johnny Stecchino.

11. When someone asked what it feels like to be Bill Murray, his response was short but satisfying: “It feels good. You’re the only you.”

If all this makes you want to revisit Ghostbusters in the best quality possible, you’re in luck, because Sony is putting out Ghostbusters 1 and 2 September 16 on newly re-mastered, extras-packed Blu-ray. Check out the Slimer-approved trailer below.
