10 Questions With Midnight Madness Programmer Colin Geddes

Colin Geddes probably has the coolest job in the world. Every year, he selects 10 movies for TIFF’s Midnight Madness (and also works on Vanguard), and every year the crowd goes wild. From action, to comedy, to horror, to straight-up unclassifiable, Midnight Madness is an all-encompassing program that guarantees one thing: you will see something totally bonkers. Here’s what Colin has to say about this year’s slate of films.

Space: In just a few words, how would you describe this year’s Midnight Madness line-up?

Colin Geddes: An international buffet with a delicacy to please everyone.

Was it a struggle whittling it down to 10 selections?

It’s always hard. I only have 10 slots and I could easily promote 15-20 films. Look at TIFF’s Vanguard program as an extra round of pinball if you like Midnight Madness.

How many hours a night do you sleep during the festival?

I’m lucky if I get to bed by 3:30, then up at 9.

Do you have a pre or post-Midnight Madness ritual?

One stiff drink before, several after.

If we weren’t in the middle of TIFF, what would you be doing tonight?

That’s hard to imagine. For the last 15 years I haven’t done anything but TIFF for 10 days in September. I’d likely be hanging with friends, playing Settlers of Catan, and sipping mixed drinks.

Were there any titles this year that caught you by surprise?

I was surprised by how cool and engaging What We Do in the Shadows was, and The Editor is the underdog of this year’s program. Imagine if the Zucker brothers directed a giallo. I enjoy having lighter fare to disperse the darker fare.

Is there any specific film you’re especially psyched to watch with the Midnight Madness audience?

Tusk is gonna play very interesting. It’s the American Human Centipede. A generational WTF film.

Are there any filmmakers you’re geeking out to meet this year?

All the filmmaker I haven’t met before, which is for four of the films: Tusk, Big Game, What We Do in the Shadows, and It Follows.

What does it take for a film to be Midnight Madness-worthy?

It’s really gotta be fresh and original. It can’t just be a typical slasher. Pacing and originality is key. If it can’t hook you in 15 minutes, forget it. Your audience is asleep.

Are there any other TIFF genre films you can endorse for the Midnight Madness crowd?

Definitely the Vanguard stuff: Takashi Miike’s Over Your Dead Body, Spring, and, for something really creepy, Goodnight Mommy.
