Disney Has Plans For 10 More Star Wars Movies

Based on the three upcoming Star Wars spin-offs, it’s safe to conclude that Disney plans to do whatever it takes to capitalize on their investment in Lucasfilm. But what happens to the main series after Episode IX comes to an end? If you’re hoping for some kind of official finale, prepare to be disappointed. The Force Awakens has now grossed over $2 billion worldwide, and no studio’s going to pull the plug on a franchise with that kind of profit potential.

As of right now, Disney is officially working on five more Star Wars films, including Episode VIII, Episode IX, a Han Solo movie, a Boba Fett movie, and Rogue One. Where the franchise goes from there is anybody’s guess, but J.J. Abrams tells The Sun we have reason to be excited. “There are some really cool things being discussed,” he says. “It is very exciting to see how it is being put together.”

After some further digging, The Sun—a tabloid that has been known to make the occasional mistake—is reporting that Disney execs are in talks to make five more Star Wars movies after the five we already know about, including possible spin-offs about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu. “The success of The Force Awakens has given executives much to think about,” an anonymous source explains. “So many characters’ backstories and futures can now be brought to life. When these ideas came from George Lucas 40 years ago, technology was lagging behind. Now they can be turned around in a year.”

With that in mind, don’t be surprised if a new Star Wars movie is released every year for many years to come. Next up is Rogue One, which arrives in theatres December 16.

As for Episode VIII, here’s a quick set update courtesy of director Rian Johnson:
