The Pros And Cons Of Getting Trapped At 10 Cloverfield Lane

Given the secrecy surrounding 10 Cloverfield Lane, we have no choice but to be somewhat cryptic. We can’t even confirm that this is a legit Cloverfield sequel, as the relationship implied by the title hasn’t been fleshed out or confirmed in any official way. So what can we tell you? If you want to remain completely in the dark, you should probably click elsewhere, but we can share what happens in the first 15 minutes: Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds herself trapped in a bomb shelter with Howard (John Goodman). Beyond that, you’re on your own, but here are the pros and cons of getting trapped at 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Pro: Fun and Games

cloverfield1

Between the impressive VHS and DVD collection (sorry, no Blu-rays), the classic tunes on the jukebox, and a stack of old board games, there’s no shortage of fun to be had in Howard’s shelter. However, sometimes the fun gets a little testy. In the film’s most memorable sequence, a good-natured game of Taboo turns wildly antagonistic when everyone starts reading between the lines.

Con: Claustrophobia

Didn’t think a movie could get any more claustrophobic than Room? Think again. Whereas that movie’s characters only spend half their screen time in a confined space, Michelle and Howard go much further. To really put yourself in their shoes, it would ideal to watch 10 Cloverfield Lane in an actual bomb shelter, but a movie theatre is a worthy substitute.

Pro: John Goodman

cloverfield3

One of the most reliable character actors of his generation, John Goodman delivers another memorable performance as a deeply troubled—but not entirely misguided—obsessive in the tradition of Misery’s Annie Wilkes.

Con: Howard

Let’s face it, nobody wants to spend any amount of time in the company of a controlling bully with weird daughter issues. Understandably, Michelle spends most of the film’s running time trying to escape and/or destroy her newfound nemesis.

Pro: Anything’s Possible

cloverfield5

From the moment Michelle awakes in the bomb shelter, you get the sense that anything is possible in 10 Cloverfield Lane. For those looking to get spooked, that’s just what the doctor ordered.

10 Cloverfield Lane arrives in theatres tomorrow. If you have a high tolerance for tension, claustrophobia, and the constant threat of alien attack, you might want to give it a chance. If you still need to know more (but not much more), watch the trailer below.
